COACH GARFIELD ELLENWOOD TO LEAD TEAM LIBERIA INTO 2008 ATHLETICS SEASON

Liberia’s “fastest man” Sayon Cooper offers advise to young Olympians
Sayon Cooper is Liberia’s fastest man that ever stepped onto the track as he still holds the 100M and 200M track records for Liberia (10.15 and 20.50). Sayon is a two-time Olympic participant representing Liberia in the 1996 and 2000 Olympics.
Sayon took a few moments to reflect on his Olympic experience as the young athletes prepare for 2008 Olympic Games from August 8 – 24, 2008.
What did it mean to you to represent Liberia in the Olympics?
It was like a dream come true. I felt like all my hard work had finally paid off. During this time period, Liberia was going through its lowest times, and because of my teammates and I, Liberians all over the globe will have hope and be proud of where they came from.
What motivated you throughout your preparation and training for the Olympics? All the people who did not believe in me and thought I would become a failure. I had no other option but to prove them wrong.
How did the whole team help each other throughout the training and competitions to work towards the team’s goals?
It was simple. We were like a family. Even though we love, respect and sometime had our own differences, everyone knew their role. We challenged each other to do well on and off the track.
What highlight, if you have to pick one, do you carry with you today from your participation in the Olympics?
The 1996 Opening ceremony, when we walked down the ramp. I felt goose bumps all over my body. Finally the world knows that Liberia, a Country where freed slaves from the United States settled after the emancipation proclamation of 1865, was represented with dignity and class.
What advice would you give Liberia’s current Olympic athletes as they prepare to compete in China?
To give a 110% in their performance and that we expect only their very best. Believed in themselves and don't think for a second that they can't be on that medal stand. Lastly, put God first and the rest will follow.
What is Sayon Cooper up to these days?
Being a father of 3 beautiful girls, Dianna Elizabeth, Taylor Synai, and Laila Symone. I work at the biggest hospital in Georgia doing social work and mentoring teenagers in DFCS custody.
